    forge material questions

Round is the only way to go ( no hot spots ). Go to Indian George's web site, he has plans for his forge. Looks like a winner. Keep in mind that if you get the damascus bug you will need a style that the flux won't destroy.

    Forge question

I have looked at the ones that Ellis has on his site I just wondered if there is a standard to go by. Perhaps Ed will tell me about his, I already copied his press, why not his forge

    Kerosene?

No, it's in the can. I said it sounded more like a bomb than a billet, but they claim that as long as they leave a pin hole they only get a fire ball (imagine that). I leave a pin hole in mine so they don't puff up and I assume that almost all of the oxygen will escape out that hole during the...

    Forge question

I am getting ready to build a new vertical forge and I'm not sure how much space to leave between the burner and the opening ( how tall to build it ). After insulating, the inside will be fifteen inches deep and eight to ten inches wide. I will leave several inches below the burner for flux but...

    Kerosene?

I have been reading a different forum on forging and they were talking about using kerosene to fill the air spaces in a can to remove the oxygen. Now they do recommend leaving a pin hole in the can, but that still seems dangerous to me, what do you do?:52: Roy

    folding steel questions

I agree, don't be afraid of getting it too hot, I have but it takes a lot. At least a bright yellow color and flux boiling. Roy

    trash can damascus

I make what I call junkyard Damascus, but I use all the same type of scrap, needle bearings or sprag elements (transmission parts)in a can and add powdered 1095 with 4% nickle for contrast. Haven't tried stainless

My first acquisition toward forging blades for real...

Hey, I not only used a RR track but built a brake drum forge and made my own hardwood charcoal. I was in hog heaven at the time. About turning it over, even though it is curved the top is more solid and will be work hardened so I would keep it upright.

    What milling Machine

I started with a lathe mill combo from harbor freight, and although I was able to cut slots even in 3/8 stainless it took a lot of time and practice. Now I have an old large gear head bench top that is pretty used up but, it is ten times better than that little one. The weight of the machine has...

    marking knives

Did you have a stencil made or are you using the carbon paper that you make yourself? I use a different brand so I can't tell you what setting to use but, I set mine at less than half power and etch for 6 seconds then remove the pad for a few seconds then go back for 6 seconds more. I do that 3...
