The knife works visually for me. Consider making the whole knife, with handles installed, out of wood. You know, quick and dirty. I just use ripped 2 by 4's and superglue for the scales. Takes about an hour, but it's nice to have the feel of the knife before you cut a bunch of steel you don't...

Hi everyone, Do you have any tricks for keeping handle pin material from embedding into handle material causing staining? I just finished a handle with beautiful white stripe in coco bola that turned dirty from my brass pin stock, and I'm feeling bummed. Thanks for your time. Duncan

I did some ivory micarta yesterday and had the same problem. I solved the problem by wet sanding. Eliminated the dust as well. Good luck.

10 gage will carry more current than 12 gage. You should be safe.

You can get endmills that small. Just take shallow cuts and take your time.

That is what I am saying. The display said 950 for 1/2 hour before I checked it. The blade measured somewhere around 800, as well as the bottom of the oven. The thermocouple at the top of the oven measured 950, because of this I have reason to believe the thermometer is in the ball park as well...

This is a very good point I will start doing this. The more I think about this the harder it is for me imagine the oven itself being 400 degrees when the thermocouple has only been 400 for 30 minutes. What do you think?

Good thought Brad, but I measured the blade temp with an infrared thermometer after it had been at the plateau temp for 30 minutes. I used a 4 segment program for my test. I did use the fastest ramp setting (9999). Between each plateau temp I held for 30 min then ramped to the next.

Tracy, I suppose I have more testing to do. I will try to raise my blades up to the top of the kiln. Thank you for talking to Evenheat, I'd like to hear if they have any tips or suggestions ( as well as anyone else). I'll let you know how my next tests go.

Thanks for your input guys. I did call Evenheat. They told me how to check the thermocouple and suggested I do a temp test using pyrometric cones. I think my thermocouple is fine and the oven is working properly. The long soak is to make sure it got to temp (but it didn't). LRB, how long...
