Micarta Question

Does anyone have a fix for dirt in the transition line between layers in the micarta , I made some white micarta and I'm having a difficult time with the finish. See Pix.IMG_2994.jpgIMG_2995.jpg

I had that problem with some ivory micarta. Taped up everything that wasn't ivory and slowly sanded, then polished by hand and waxed it. After which I removed the tape and it it was much improved. I still have more of it and it will more than likely stay in the "I'll use this some day" box. It was a nightmare to use.

The ivory micarta was definitely a nightmare.
It took a while to catch on but most important was using a fresh belt for each operation. At first I kept chasing the dirt with acetone which worked somewhat. DO NOT let the micarta in the same room as silicon carbide paper. On this particular knife I shaped bolsters and handle up to 3500 grit, polished the whole handle with grey compound ONLY and then taped off the micarta to polish the bolsters with green compound. Wiped down the handle with windex to clean any residue then finished with a loose buff with just wax. The tapered and etched tang just added to the difficulty but tape is your friend, use it. This should work with white micarta too. Good luck.

I had the same problem with white paper micarta. Use sandpaper for wood. I forgot whether it was 3M or Scotch, but one makes a red colored paper. It won't remain in the pours like the dark gray/black wet dry sandpaper we use for metal.
