    Smelting some ore

I'm planing on doing another smelt the first weekend of October on Sunday the 7th. If anyone is around the thumb of Michigan (little town of Elkton) and wants to stop over and watch You're more than welcome to come over. I'll most likely start the preheat of the stack early in the morning and...

    The God particle

Science is the pursuit of knowledge, that is never going to stop. "Scientists" will accept things that are proven wrong and move on, something alot of folks could learn from. There are lots of things out there that I believe will never be proven, but does that mean we should give up? Zeb

    Smelting some ore

I've been slowly working on processing the bloom and after a few folds it was sparking like low carbon steel, but it was solid. I decided to mix in some very high carbon hearth steel from an Aristotle furnace ( http://www.leesauder.com/pdfs/Aristotle's%20Steel.pdf ) I usually make the furnaces...

3 axis milling table? - where can I find one?

Finding a 3 axis machine with no milling or grinding head will prove very difficult. Grizzly has some decent 2 axis tables. Most folk will build the 3rd axis. If you'd like I can take a few pics of how I built a third axis on a milling table, I've got a router mounted to it, but I've never used...

    Smelting some ore

Tracy, I really like the idea of making a knife from ore as well, I'm probably going about getting started making knives backwards from the way it's supposed to be, but I kinda like starting out making my own metal first. I'd be making better knives by now if I had dedicated as much time to...

    Smelting some ore

Mike, I've never heard of using black beauty, from what I understand it's the slag from a blast furnace, so unless it's magnetic, I doubt it will work. As far as breaking the bloom by quenching it, I had wondered the same thing, and have it on pretty good authority, that it probably won't help...

    Smelting some ore

Thanks Tracy. From spark testing the outside the carbon varies a bit, but most of it sparks like mid carbon. The inside can be quite a bit different, so it's probably best to spark test after a few folds are in. I know a few folks who work in the local foundry and in talking with one of the...

    Smelting some ore

I just updated my website with a bit of my journey into smelting ( http://clevercrowforge.weebly.com/steel-making.html ) I've only been smelting for a little while and I'm pretty hooked on doing it. I'm planing on doing a couple more smelts before the snow flies around here. There's nothing...

Pictures from Kevin Cashen's Get together

I figured I'd add some pics as well. I showed up there Friday morning and left Saturday afternoon, I really wished I could've stayed longer, but from my short time there, I met some fantistic people. It was great to meet everyone there! Kevin watching through the tuyere Getting some of...

    Another feather fighter!!

That feather pattern is beautiful! Feathered patterns are so organic, Imho some of the most gorgous damascus patterns. That burl sets it off perfectly

    Been playing with Feathered W's

Thank you C Craft! I've definatly got some time into this one, but working in front of a hot fire is kinda relaxing after a hard day's work :) I tend to like the more organic patterns, one's that seem planed out just don't do it for me, even though there's just as much planing in this. I got...

    Been playing with Feathered W's

I've been tinkering around with some feather patterns. I'm using Aldo's 1095 and 15n20 starting with 18 layers and the 15n20 doubled up. The first one came out ok, but when drawing it out after the last weld, it got cocked a bit and the pattern was different from side to side. I still finished...

    Chainsaw chain kwaiken

I've been working on this for a little while. It started out as a chainsaw chain and a few small files. Once I got the initial billet welded up, I trippled it 4 more times to give it a finer pattern. The handle wrap is done with a black leather strip. Today I finally got around to hardening and...

    Got me a press!!

Thanks guys. I like hammering steel too, but to get a chain to stick up to itself would be ALOT of hammering :)

Making my first try at damascus !

clean the saw chain really good before you start. I heated it up good to burn off the oil and when it was cool, soaked it in dilute muriatic acid to strip the scale and grime. When bringing it up to temp for welding, make sure to flux it before it starts to scale, use lots of flux to get in all...

    Chainsaw Chain Damascus

Here's part 2 of the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsOwTTlz22M&feature=youtu.be And here's a pic of the completed knife. The handle is bocote and the pins are copper. The teeth on the back are kinda by accident, I was grinding a clip point on the blade and while grinding it, it...
