    Went Official !!!

:steve: For a few reasons, the most important in terms of timing not even being knife related, I decided to officially become a business in the eyes of Connecticut. It'll increase the paperwork hassles and require me to be far more diligent about my record keeping but I think it was the right...

    Grinding after HT

Good point, I had forgotten about doing a partial bevel in to help the belt with that start. I'm thinking 60RC, since none of the blades are meant to be chopper types or rough use designs. I'll be giving them a call before sending in but I think I've got that part pretty well figured out. :)

    Grinding after HT

Doug, I'm sending them out to Paul Bos heat treating, I'm just not setup to do it myself and even if I had the equipment I think I'd send it out for now. That created the issue actually. Between shipping and the pricing schedule it makes sense to send out a decent batch of blades, not one or two...

    Grinding after HT

Gotcha. Where does CPM154 fall in the carbide hardness range? I found tons of info about carbide size and distribution, but nothing on type/hardness. Assume a Paul Bos heat treat, since that's where I'm planning to send it. I ask because I have a stack of profiled blades that I'd love to work...

    Grinding after HT

I did things a bit differently than my usual this weekend and thought I'd discuss it here since some aspects of it surprised me. I was grinding a fairly long blade from 1/8" 1084 and wanted to avoid having it bend on me during grinding and heat treating. The obvious solution was to profile...

    Belts

I have to add to my previous comment on the 984's. I used the same two belts to profile and grind another version of the same knife. Slightly longer blade, smaller handle. This time I did the bevels post heat treating. Both belts are STILL useable and on my wall for the next knife. I'm not...

    Belts

I finally got to try out the 984's I got from Tracy, 36 and 60 grit. Definitely liking them. I haven't used them up so I can't comment on longevity, but so far they seem to be holding up well. I completely ground one 6" bladed knife including some profiling work. 90% of that was on the 984's and...

1084 Wharny in black linen micarta

Makes sense to me, particularly when you have less reliably metallurgy and expect constant use. Even with modern steels I've damaged a few wharncliffes due to how thin they tend to be up front.

1084 Wharny in black linen micarta

1084 Wharny in black linen micarta - SOLD This is the second of this model. 1/8" 1084 from Aldo Bruno and my own heat treating. This is about 7.5" long overall with just under 3.5" of blade. The scales are black linen micarta 1/8" thick for a slim and light knife. The mark is just etched into...

1084 Wharny in Oregon maple burl

The first of my new Isle Royale pattern is now for sale. Featuring a bright but not full mirror finish, Oregon Maple Burl wood handles stabilized by K&G, 1/8" 1084 from Aldo Bruno and my own heat treating. This is about 7.5" long overall with just under 3.5" of blade. The scales are about 1/8"...

    Hi all - Central CT

I could have sworn I'd posted in here but a quick search said no and I'm getting ready to try out the for sale section so I figured I'd make sure I was following the rules. A lot of you know me from that other forum. :shush: I'm a part time knife maker, part time a bunch of other work. Mostly...

    Isle Royale

I like that term. :) It's not quite spear point, the lower curve doesn't actually come up very far, but it does kind of give it that effect. I don't have it handy at my desk to measure but I'd say it's probably a 25% rise, 75% drop. They're not absolutely identical profiles either, I only use...

    Isle Royale

And now the black version. I fixed the smudges and white of the linen showing through a bit and reshot the first image but didn't bother with the second one.

    Wave accounting?

Good to know. I definitely noticed that issue with how to properly track inventory costs for materials. All it can really tell me is my total outgoing and incoming, or break it down into categories. It can't really help calculate how much knife X cost me to make. If I need to know that for any...

    Isle Royale

I sketched out this design back in March and profiled the first few in early April but then they got benched by other projects. I have always liked wharny style blades but had issues with just how delicate the tips got, given the complete lack of belly. I figured a slight curve at the end might...

Anyone else having problems with Norton Blaze...

Thanks for the update. I'm holding off on Blaze for now, waiting on the updated belts. I think a lot of times companies make the mistake of thinking of their big customers as a faceless entity and don't worry about service as much when it's for an individual as long as their big customers aren't...

    don't know what to do - D2

Jantz is definitely an option, once you're paying for international shipping on much steel at all you might as well fill up the box, you're paying for it anyway. I have bought from them on a number of occasions with no issues.

    uh-oh.

drill bigger? soften the material with a torch before tapping? more lube, smaller turns? I'm horrible at it myself, but usually don't break anything past #4.

    Marking knives with your name

Yup. I made the mistake of trying for some variety in my initial order of stencils from Mr. Grospitch. I wasn't sure which setup and size I'd prefer and now I'm down to just the logo, without my name. I've got some of my name without the logo, but trying to line everything up to use two...

Need a small wheel attachment, where and what size wheel??

Let me know what you think of that combo, Robert. I'm planning the same thing for sometime in the fairly short term, just need to sell some knives. I was thinking the 3/4" and then getting a 1 1/2 or 1 1/4". I'm getting a 2" rubber wheel on the top of my platen so that seems like it would give...
