Steel choice / A2 vs O1 or Other

Hello All - After a long hiatus I would like to make some more leather tools. I’ve recently been using blades made from Aogami Blue and they put the blades that I’ve made from O1 to shame. They are much harder and holds an keen edge. I’m considering A2 for the next round of knives. By the...

    Planning for D2 blade

Thanks for the very thorough answer. I’m excited to use a new steel though I am still only making different types of leatherworking tools and chisels. Will probably try my hand at a honest hunting knife next.

Very sleek design. Modern yet classic. Can’t wait to see what you’ll do for a sheath.

    Planning for D2 blade

Hmmm. I didn’t account for a sub zero quench. I can get some liquid N2 but so don’t have a dewar. Dry Ice will probably be the easiest for me. To make a slurry could I put the dry ice into glycerin or glycol? What is the typical “oil” or carrier people use? Thanks for the reply Samurai!

    Planning for D2 blade

Hello All - So I have made quite a few leather skiving knives out of O1 steel and apart from the second mess of a knife, they all came out pretty good. What I would like to try now is D2 steel hoping that it will provide not only the razor sharpness of O1 but would also help to keep the edge...

    Finish on Japanese kitchen knives

Ahhh. Right. I should have thought about San-mai. It would explain the pitted look as well as the darker color. The mill scale on my O1 is never that dark nor consistent in color. I had researched how to possibly recreate the look artificially using cold or hot metal treatments (such as...

    Finish on Japanese kitchen knives

Thanks Ed. I wonder if it’s some residue from differential hardening. I guess it’s going to be more research and testing.

    Finish on Japanese kitchen knives

Hello folks - I was hoping to get some insight into the blackened surface appearance on the knives in the attached photos. Is this an applied treatment or merely the raw finish after hardening? Much appreciated - Ed

1” Rockwell Sander - Go for it?

That TW-90 looks seriously awesome. Do you ever use it in the horizontal position?

1” Rockwell Sander - Go for it?

Wayne - I was seriously considering building a grinder from a kit/plans but I have read/heard that the final product cost savings after time, expense, etc to be minimal and the quality lacking. I’ve gone down the road of “hey - I can make that no problem for half of what you paid” and then...

1” Rockwell Sander - Go for it?

Thanks Ed, John - appreciate the advice. As recommended, I’m going to pass on this unit and continue saving. Apart from knifemaking the grinders seem so useful for a bunch of other things... I reckon that I’ll be posting something soon ;)

1” Rockwell Sander - Go for it?

Hello folks - I’ve been looking around for a decent grinder for a while but finding a used 2x72 is like finding the holy grail. I did come up with this 1x32 1hp Rockwell sander/grinder and I can probably pick it up for cheap. Is this worth getting or should I pass and keep looking? Space is...

    Joining wood for handle

Ahhh. Right! I can see how the fiber spacers would act to "grab" the metal and mediate between the wood and the metal. A lot to learn this knifemaking is <yoda voice>

    Joining wood for handle

Thanks for your help guys. This is what I came up with in the end. Its Blackwood over Oak. On my first attempt I used an aluminum spacer between the two but it failed miserably as I think I may not have scored/sanded the aluminum enough as Ed had recommended. Fed up I ditched the spacer and...

    Joining wood for handle

Thank you John - what do you typically use as lining material? It would definitely add some class to the handle. I have some brass that I was going to try but I've also seen people use a felt like material.

    Joining wood for handle

I would like to stack two hardwoods together vertically for a hidden tang knife handle. Do I need to add anything to prevent the two woods from separating over time or is two part epoxy between the sections enough? I would think that the epoxy used to join them together coupled with the knife...

    Finished with my first knife

Thanks guys! I appreciate the encouragement. Not sure that my wife can handle another hobby of mine. I find myself stealing away for hours at a time working on my next knife. My "shop" is at my office so I'll be there from after dinner to midnight or later. Does anyone else do this and...

    Finished with my first knife

Hello all - So i'm finally done with my first knife. Not the sexiest or coolest knife in the world but for what it is, a skiving tool, it works like a charm. I have big balloon hands so it's nice to have a handle that fits my hands perfectly. I'm going to use it for a while, take notes and...
