I couldnt decied between 10" and 12" contact wheel

I have an 5, 8 and once I got a 10" wheel I retired my 8" wheel. I now only hollow grind on either a 5" or a 10" 5" obviously small knives and 10" on large ones. I would bet a 12 would be very handy, probably almost make me retire my 10" wheel. I bet you will be very happy with it. Main reason...

Using a Pipe in a Gas Forge

I use a pipe in my HT forge, my system is heat forge up to high temp fast. Takes about 10 mins or more, next put in my pipe and allow pipe to get to high temp. Next lower PSI to about nothing, just where the forge is barely running and shoot for desired temps. I personally use a Thermocouple...

Won't be making knives for about 6 weeks :(( !

Could have been alot worse, at least you still have all your fingers. I foolishly was pushing too hard on the metal bandsaw and had a small mishap. It happens to us all, as others stated learn from it and dont ever make that mistake again. Now rest up and get back to the shop soon. CW

    Glass platen

Just do what I do, start out with your toolrest at the bottom of the flat platten and as you get a groove move it up until you get to flat glass again and start grinding. CW

    Anyone using a Roller Mill??

I bought plans once off the net for a rolling mill. The plans seemed very good and very doable. I forget now where I got them but if you intended to every make one it would be a very good investment to get the plans and study them. CW

    Lathe work today

Lathes are alot of fun and making something like this can help figure it out and realize what accessories you are missing. And lets face it, brass is just a blast to turn. So easy on your tools. Post pics if you make one. CW

    Lathe work today

The first one I ever made I reamed them .124 and hammerd the scribe into a 2x4 wood block for a press fit. But now I just drill a .125 hole and use one drop of crazy glue to hold bit in. I figure with a little heat I could probably easily break the glue bond and get it out if necessary. CW

    Lathe work today

Had a friend want one of my Scribe tools, SO I made 5 and gave him pick of the litter. These are the ones leftover, thought I would share with you guys to show what I do with broken 1/8 drill bits and carbide cutters. CW

    Info need, grinding belts...

Yea I agree with Bill, Tracy in his sanding belt section gives great advice on how he uses his belts that I have adopted. Personally I use 50 grit ceramic blaze as my primary hogging belt 120 grit J flex Klingspor for my plunges and to get blade to 120. Next heat treat and lastly 220 in either...

You guys have a source for step drill bits?

Give me the dims and if I have some O-1 in the right size I will whip one out for you. One thing to note that style bit does not drill a hole that effectively. What I do is drill a hole with a conventional bit about .010 smaller than the pilot diameter. THis then takes pilot hole to the right...

You guys have a source for step drill bits?

Do you have a lathe, if so just get some O-1 and make your own. Photo attached of what I made to make 1911 grips. I think this style bit with the right dimensions could easily be whipped up by anyone with a lathe and a mill.

    Need a Grinding Wet 101

Yes your nuts, There are those that grind wet. Not many but there out there. You would of course need to use sanding belts that could handle it of course, You are definitely heading into territory that not many have ventured. Personally I built a grinding room to contain the dust from the rest...

Anyone else having problems with Norton Blaze...

Sorry if it sounded like I was coming down on Blaze and St. Gobain. I truly do love there product though, been meaning to try 3m but man these blaze in 50 grit just really keep working for me. I do see the crud on my contact wheel though, but not bad enough to warrant trying to remove it or it...

Anyone else having problems with Norton Blaze...

Sad a belt manufacturer rep has to go to a knifemaker shop to determine a problem is a problem. Do they not test where they manufacture? I also do as others have stated and have a razor blade close by and frequently clean platten with it. CW
