    Pheer Grinder

Just call Jose and ask him the size of the platen. He normally answers the phone, or gets back to you very quickly.

    Knife as a Retirement Gift

I do this all the time. I put my mark on the left (the side you are showing), and the requested engraving on the opposite side. There is no rule that I know of.

1 1/2 hp Baldor is this a deal?

When I hit the link, the item had been removed. Just get one that is TEFC, and save yourself all the future headaches.

    Grinders

Single speed Wilmont generally means a Little Buddy. Their entry level smaller machine. Their TAG grinder is the one to compare to. You can call and get a price on a LB in variable speed too. I've used both and each has it's strong points. Between them I prefer the the Wilmont TAG. Now...

In Fond Memory of Chuck Burrows

He will be greatly missed. I learn a lot from his DVDs. After posting some of my leather work inspired by him I had the opportunity to share a few moments with him. My prayers go out to both him and his family.

Is a cheap mill better than no mill at all?

I also support the G0704 as the way to go. It's a BF20 clone that is easy to use and far more accurate due to the square column. It's not that expensive new either. The problem I've had is Grizzly having it in stock when I wanted to order one.

PID Controlled Forges..... Thoughts and advice

Very well stated Ed. I thought about going down that path. After a lot of research and playing around with a prototype I chuck the idea. A PID once you have it together with a themocouple becomes a nice fancy thermometer. It does have a viable use for me in that configuration. Thus not a total...

    Thanks again, Smithy

Both gentlemen you mentioned are are great people. I too received 2 pieces from Smithy. Great wood and finishes very nicely. Nice looking knife you're making. Good luck with your journey down this path. The 2, I made using Smithy's gift.

Wood or Plexiglass for knife patterns

Currently I use A36 .128" steel for my forge to templates/guides. They don't flex or bend, and heat doesn't affect them. I also write on them.

    Forged blade

Nice! My first one was supposed to be a 6" blade and OAL of 11". I ended up with a 16.5" chopper! LOL Yours looks good! Keep it up and in a few more you'll have it down to a very close guessament... "Forge on and stay sharp!"

How many of you guys use a coal forge?

I started with a coal forge and still use one in most of the ABS classes I take. Being in South Florida coal is very expensive to bring in, that's why I switched in my studio to propane. I made my coal forge using a cut down brake drum.

Suggestions to not get cabin fever

Walt I just spent near a year off my feet. It's a great time to improve your leather craft skills. I must of made 30 sheaths for my best seller profile. I currently only work a couple of hour 3 days a week in the shop but, find I'm still making leather goods. My favorite movies are old...

First shot at forging a blade

Just a quick photo of hammer faces. I clean and polish them whenever they look like the surface isn't smooth. Whatever imperfections are on the face will transfer to the blade surface. The Complete Bladessmith is a good book to use as a reference.
