    cleaver blade geometry

John, thanks for the reply. I am re-purposing some 440c steel I received from a member here. your right, it is thick heavy stuff. I'll try a full flat grind. How thin should I grind pre heat treat? also what hardness should I be shooting for? I have never worked with stainless before, any other...

    cleaver blade geometry

I want to make a kitchen cleaver. I have some 1/4" thick 440C I plan on using. I am thinking about a good 1" wide bevel, flat ground. leaving the edge about .05 thick pre heat treat. I would put the edge on using the slack belt. is this a good idea?

    Blade geometry and edge toughness

Thanks for the info Ed! I have one with a full flat grind, however, the edge prior to heat treat was about .040". If we are just talking about the cutting edge. what would you consider the thinnest before you sharpen it? I guess I should be using the slack belt to sharpen these.

    Blade geometry and edge toughness

So I wanted to make a chopper type knife. I decided to use 80CRV2 3/16” thick. I flat ground the bevels, and sent off to Peters heat treat for the HT. I asked for 58-59 rc. When I put the edge on it. I put the blade in a fixture and set the angle to 20* per side. I sharpen against the platen. I...

    hot off the bench

Ausbrooks, hey buddy, yes and no. i did some file work on the spine, trying to make it look like a "spine" the file work on the false edge up front was an after thought, mostly cosmetic for the customer.

Ed, yes i did have some issues with the LED flashlights. so now i check them before i do anything. aaa battery and a jumper wire and you can see if it works. once you have a good working one, then you must make sure that the inside of the battery tube is clean of glue. then hit it with some 400...
