    The Original Kephart Knife Examined

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. That knife is an excellent example of minimalist design in that there is nothing there that doesn't need to be there, yet it has some nice subtle details that are easily missed. Now I want to make one....

What do you use to do layout?

I use a fine point orange sharpie, virtually any stain will completely hide it. They can be a little hard to find without buying an entire set though.

Questions about a pull ring knife

I rather like this one... https://www.bladesmithsforum.com/index.php?/topic/29026-long-folder-short-navaja/ That particular craftsman makes quite a few primitive folders including a few others with a pull ring. https://www.bladesmithsforum.com/index.php?/topic/26583-navaja/ When it comes...

    forge for sword making

In operation there should be a bit of flame coming out the top, and a dull roar from the burner. It's not like you're burning the backyard with a flamethrower...:) But seriously, you should consider moving to a place with a less authoritarian government...

    forge for sword making

I'm hoping to build a vertical heat-treating forge this summer using a hot water heater tank for the body, so I'm in the same boat as you. The urge to make swords can be put off no longer.... A single burner design seems to be the ticket, with enough area that the heat will even itself out. A...

    forge for sword making

I assume you want a forge for heat-treating a sword, as a sword can be forged to shape using almost any forge design. I would suggest reading this thread.

    san mai seax

A simple seax in san mai... sides are wrought iron, core is 1084, handle is rock maple, sheath fittings are bronze. 6 1/2" blade, 12 3/4" overall length. Very light and fast in the hand.....

What are you going to make in 2016?

Hopefully this will be the year of the sword, if I am successful in building a special forge for heat-treating them. The very first blade I ever made was a sword... my next was a 2" skinner. I've been working my way back to swords ever since.

    Looking for a pattern for a Sgian-Dubh

For starters, it is hard to beat an image search.... Here is a pattern I've used, made with a 3 1/2" blade so it is legal in Scotland... (I beefed up the tang considerably)

    Probably confused for no reason....

There is a big difference in temperatures involved also. Annealing is done at 1450+, tempering at 375+...

    Heat treating files.

Take a torch (if you don't have one, hopefully you know someone who does), heat the tang of the file up to bright red, hot enough that a magnet will no longer stick. Immediately quench in water. Lock it in a vise and wack the tang with a hammer.... if it is suitable steel, it will break almost...
