Admiral's 1084

Frank,

I'm pretty sure your 1084 is Hot Rolled. IE not annealed and will be very hard on drills and saws unless you anneal it.

It is possible to work with it in the HR state but it is HARD on tools.

The 1084 isn't too bad. I didn't have trouble drilling or cutting it. The 1095 was a killer though.

I've been working with this stuff recently. Grind off the scale and get some cobalt bits and drill slowly with cutting fluid

I just stick mine in the HT oven and take it to crit then cut the HT oven off and let it cool overnight, comes out nice and soft, drills like wood.

I haven't used Admiral's 1084, but have had experience with their other materials (some of which are fine).

My advice is that if it's a high-stakes forge project, you should have their material independently tested to verify the carbon content (for one thing) is where you expect it.

I've gotten 1084 from Aldo and also from Kelly C. Their material has been spot-on.
