Canister welded cable can be welded in either direction, lengthways or endways, with the contrast coming from the powdered steel used to fill around the cable before its sealed inside its can.
I prefer cable that has been drawh endways; it has a far more interesting pattern. Drawing it length ways is a bit predictable.
This cable damascus was welded parallel to the cable strands, then turned on its end and drawn out, showing the ends of the cable in the pattern. The top pic shows a section of the cable swedge that was welded up to make the billet.
The usable part of the billet is 1/4 x 1 x 12. You can see the 3/8 inch wide mild steel casing that held the cable.
For scale its 3.25 inches inside the blue lines.
