Coloring stabilized wood

Gene Kimmi

KNIFE MAKER
I have quite a bit of soft, curly maple that would need stabilizing as it is fairly soft. I have had K&G dye and stabilize some for me, but haven't found a medium brown color that I like. I was wondering if anybody had tried dyeing any stabilized wood after the handle is shaped and finish sanded?

I plan to try using a leather dye then several coats of tru-oil and see how well it holds up, but if someone has a better method they would be willing to share, I'd appreciate it.

Here are a few blocks I have that are stabilized.

I do it to stabilized maple all the time, too. I use TransTint as well as Fiebings leather dye, alone or in combination. Then I finish with TruOil.

Thanks guys. Exactly what I needed to know. I may use these blocks for color samples and send a bunch more in to K&G.

I use Sherwin Williams' dyes in the cabinet shop to match colors, so I can mix about any color with those.
