Convex grinding.

I understand how to put a convex edge on a knife. I am really looking for help on how to put a convex grind either spine to edge, or say a high saber to edge with knives around 3/32 and 1/8 stock.

I just received a rotary platen and am still in the dark on using it.

Timy,
A convex can be done by slack belt, Flat platen or the Tank track convex grinding attachment.
On the KMG attachment you will notice that there are wheels placed at different lengths around it. You want the one that will match the height of the blade you wish to grind for a conplete convex, or a smaller one if you are making a Saber grind, say about two-thirds of the height of the blade.

I hope this helps some? Sharp belts are in order, other than that there really aren't any hard rules here. So grind away and experiment to find what works best for you?
Have fun!

Laurence thanks for posting man!

So do I sort of walk the grind up, or with said attachment will it essentially need one pass and its at the height I need just need to keep thinning until Im at the right edge?

My thinking is, grind it as a scandi style grind first to about 12.5 degrees each side. Then, grind away the 'hump' so that instead of two facets (bevel and flat) you now have 3. Then, grind the 'humps' again so you have 5 facets. Now, blend so instead of facets you have a curve starting at 12.5 degrees and blending into flat at the spine.

Make sense?

Timy,
You will remove metal most at the top and then the spine area at first. adjust your angle & pressure to take off more where you want you to depending on if you are doing a Saber grind or full convex. You may want to grind on a Turkey ground blade that lying around to get a feel for it. I know you have at least one if you made any knives at all?

The tension of the tank belt on the attachment is adjustable for deep or more shallow grinds. Be very careful with fingers around the edges of that tank belt. Never brace your hand on that side plate or any other brilliant manuver. " Ask me how I know?" :34:

I got a little to close once and got a heck of a pinch out of it on the skin of my finger If it catches the tip of a finger it would most likely crush it.
