Usually unless you went to far I have found that color is on surface only. That usually means its still OK. Its when the color goes all the way through the tip, its burnt!
If I am worried about it being burnt, I will sand it with some wet/dry high grit, automotive paper and see if I can cut through the color, if it cuts through the color I know I just warmed it enough to make it color but if I work on it with the wet/dry and I don't appear to be cutting the color I know I have goofed and will have to grind off enough to remove the burnt tip!
Tips are on of the easiest things to scorch as when the heat of the grind hits it, there is no place left for it too go. Cool often when getting down to he last few passes!
I would almost bet your OK on that one, when the color goes blue/black it usually ain't even worth checking. Brown/gold is usually OK.
