Dog question on a knife forum

Hi Guys

Here is a question for the dog lovers out there. I have a pair of German Shepard cross's (OK mutts). These guys are 11 this year and are showing their age. Their hips are bugging them from time to time and I want a pain killer similar to Advil or Tylenol for dogs. Nothing for long time use just occasional rough spots.

I'm getting no where with the vet they think we need blood tests regularly, etc, etc. From where I sit it looks like they want to take me down an expensive slope. My dogs are great and I think the world of them but nothing can be done to turn back the hands of time. Anyone know of a product that fits what I'm looking for?

The Canine equivalent is called Rimadil? not sure of spelling. It didn't work for my old girl but that is the most prescribed medicine for dogs in pain.

I used Bayer Aspirin, the 88mg coated kind that us older farts are suppose to take to ward off heart attacks.

The aspirin worked for my 60 pound Irish Terrorist doggie when she hit about 10 years old and the stiffness and pain she had in the winter in particular was so obvious. I gave it too her every other day. Watch for signs of stomach upset

Some dogs can take it and others can't. My girl Suki made it to 16 and change before she gave me the look that it just wasn't a fun life anymore.

So go to another vet or buy some asprin or get the Rymidal on line.
The Aspirin is much less expensive of course.

You sure they're not suffering from hip dysplasia? I'm looking in the 'Doctors Foster and Smith' catalog. Many types of pain medication but looks like you'll need a prescription from your vet. If their joints are aching, you can buy Joint Care product online (doesn't look like you need a prescription). It might help your dogs problem. Good luck in finding something that keeps the pets going with a pain-free future.

Brad, I'd recommend that you find another vet. Did they not discuss Rimadyl with you? Like Laurence said, Rimadyl is the preferred NSAID for canines. It's what I'd recommend if the aspirin isn't cutting it. Please do not give your dogs ibuprofen. Generic Rimadyl is available - I'd find a vet that understands that you're just trying to improve your dogs' quality of life without spending a fortune.

Thanks for the advice but I'm afraid I don't need it now. Poor old guy passed at 8:55 AM. Everything was fine last night but this morning when I let them out he did not look right and was panting when he came in. I decided to call the vet at 9:00 when the are open, but he did not make it. He just lied down and stopped breathing. I have had dogs since I was a kid but by far Jerry was my favorite. You never saw a bigger goof that loved everybody and was as gentle as a lamb. Jerry will be sorely missed by me and my wife and daughter

Brad, I'm so sorry to hear that. Jerry looks like a wonderful dog and I'm glad he had such a great family to enjoy life with.

Brad,
Sorry for your loss!
I had that one special dog pass a couple of years ago and reading about your Jerry now just brought a tear to my eye.

It seems he didn't suffer and was with his pack at his time, you will always remember the happy times with him..

Sorry to hear that. Dogs are part of a family.

I have one going on 19 right now... pushing for a record. Lots of extra care, but worth every minute. Poor old guy is deaf and blind, but not really suffering. Lost my other two last year.

Brother I can feel for you I lost two big dogs within thirty days of each other, about three years ago. I just got around to feeling like I needed another dog and rescued one from the pound about six months ago. They can weave their ways around your heart and through your soul. At least you know he off running now like a young pup, and in no pain! We'll all be together one day again, I truly believe that!

EVERYONE!

Forget the clouds and harps!

I know there is a happy Dog park full of Knife Doggies that we will all meet up again in with our pooches and we will all be pain free and able to run & be happy!:117_running_dog:
