Drilling Talonite?

I've been asked for a bid to put new micarta scales on a full-tang talonite blade.

After a bit of reading it seems I will need to use a solid carbide bit to drill holes for the Corby bolts the customer wants. Is this correct? I've drilled hardened steel this way several times without problems.

If carbide bits aren't the answer, what should I look for? I don't mind buying the proper bit, just want to know what I'm in for cost-wise, so I don't under-bid myself.

Thanks!

I have always used solid carbide to drill this material. It is designed as a wear resistant material and HSS will not work.

Thanks George. This will be my first time working with it. After a little research, I wasn't even sure solid carbide would work!

Are you enlarging holes or making new ones? A carbide endmill works better for enlarging existing holes, just make sure the set-up is solid.

These will be brand-new holes in a flat tang. If I was a little smarter I'd post the pic the client sent me. Maybe tomorrow I'll figure it out.

Thanks for bringing that up, though, I hadn't thought about the difference between the two applications.
