dust collection kweshan!

hey guys

i plan on 'making' a dust collection system, i'll pretty mich buy the blower (motor that can either suck in or blow out) attach it to those spring alumonum pipes, one side at the grinder another to either collect in a large back or to blow at a bit of distance (i live in apartment buolding and work in balcony, so leaning towards collecting in a bag for the sake of neighbors)

i asked at a shop that sold the supplies nad he suggested that since i have only few meters to cover a 1/2hp blower would do the trick.

btw that so far would survice only one grinder that i use for pretty much everything! maybe later ad somethong else though

now, would that be suffiecient? anything else to consider or take into account? any tips?

thanks

In fact this is a big deal. You do need a collection system of one sort or another but blowing into a bag will mean you are going into start a FIRE !!!! Being able to send it outside into a metal container that has some air release will allow most of the dust to be collected. Frank

Hey Frank

Your tagline has new meaning with this thread. :)

One of the suggestions I have is that most dust collection systems are designed for wood - and that requires low velocity and high volume. metal filings require high velocity and only moderate volume to keep them moving along. My shop vac does a better job of moving metal dust than my 1 1/2 HP dust collection system.

Frank, VERY good point!!

Rob, would a pipe with small diameter do the trick? i was thinking of having the end near the grinder bit narrow (inverted plastic bottle with base cut off, pretty much forming a cone, wide at top to collect dust and narrow at bottom to help with the suction).

thanks guys

Shokr, to be honest, I don't know. I would guess (intuitively) that any place the diameter gets larger, that the velocity would decrease and particles would accumulate. My inclination would be to go with a 2" hose for the whole trip - much like a shop vac hose. Your idea of a cone to colect - narrowing to build velocity might well work.

I should be able to do the physics on this, but these days it makes my head hurt. :22:

Two words dust deputy. I sucked up 25 pounds of fine aluminum oxide dust from my blast cabinet the other day with this thing connected and seriously there was not even a spec in my shop vac. It is truly an amazing product. You will have 100% suction the inter time.

I use a 1 gal milk jug with bottom cut off. and yes somtimes I have to give it a tap as not all goes down around the edges. My 2 inch hose pluges right into the milk jug mouth and is tight.
Then I have a couple gallons of water in the vac container to prevent fire.

the dust deputy is not an option now, i think at first i will just go for throwing out, IF neighbors complain i'll find a solution for collection then

thanks guys
