Finishing CPMS35VN

Frank Niro

KNIFE MAKER
I'm doing a couple of folder blades in S35VN. I have read where a maker or two have said they get a good satin finish from this steel and also believe it will polish in a good manner. My satin finish down at about 2000 grit is still dirty or cloudy looking. If you have been getting good results at the satin finishing , pleae write me a way to do that. I did find that the grinding went very well. Thanks . Frank

Get everything flat and if you've got a buffer, put on the sisal wheel and use some black emory compound. It will take some time. Then polish to taste. I often give it a quick hit with a sewn wheel and white compound. It is a bit of a dark steel but it looks cool in satin to me.

Use Mobil 1.

I know you already do. Just kidding. I use it too. I wonder if you can take S35VN to that fine of a finish. It may not give you the finish you want at that grit. Most makers I know aren't going that high. Myself I only go to 600.

John,
I will try the 600 and see if that will work for me. Like you said that could be as far as you should go with it. Hey would you believe I also tried plain water, Windex, and three other knids of oil besides the Mobil 1 ?

Well I guess that's it then ! The 600 look is okay. I will go with it. I will go back to using CPM154. The Elmax was very good but I only want a few inches now and then and KnifeMaker.ca doesn't carry the Elmax.
