Great work here Mikey. I like everything about it. The damascus is nice, the whole profile and shape are very nice. Great handle shape and materials and really nice grinds. The fit and finish looks really good.
Very well done, simplistic but elegant knife. Really clean work. Thanks for posting it.
It takes some getting used to , but I have to say , it wasnt as bad as I thought . When I would grind with a jig , I really didnt have to pay as much attention to my speed , except for the higher grit belts ( too much heat ) . It didnt matter cause the knife was clamped in the jig and the grinds would come out real close to perfect . The only problem using a jig is it would always leave the tip of the blade a little heavier then the rest . I didnt have the capability to roll the blade when I was grinding the front.
Free hand feels like you can do more . Your not committed with the jig. I found that slower speeds all the way through the grinds give me more control . Im able to clean up my plunges a little better , and I get a better grind towards my point area too.. I like it . No more jigs for me ..
I have a project coming up . I need to make a 12" knife with ivory scales and I cant use my jig. First of all , my table rest is too small and the jig is too. So I figured its about time I start moving on and practicing grinding free hand on other blades before I start this project .
