First Hidden Tang Attempt

Gene. I tried to post a sk
Not the best example as this one is my San Mai blade that I didn't bring the wrought iron clear down the tang. You can see that the tang is wider at the ricasso and narrower and thinner at the end of the tang. When I file to fit the guard, I check fit every few strokes of the file. When I get the guard to fit within an 1/8" or so of the ricasso, I lightly tap it on further. If it gets real tight, I will file a little more. This gives you a press fit of the guard to the knife.

Gene do I have the sketch correct!

Yes, that is correct.

Here's another trick. Take a piece of mirror and hold it flat to the blade side of the guard after it is fit. If the guard is square, the blade edge and it's reflection will be a straight line.

The first picture below is correct, the second is not.

I have a bunch of scrap plastic mirror pieces if anybody wants a piece. Just message me an address, and I'll send it to you.

Think about it in terms of fitting a wine cork into the bottle. The cork is tapered all the way around so that there is a perfect friction fit into the bottle opening. If that makes sense at all.
