First time grinding and....

It went ok but this will be a learning curve. im using a 1x42 with a ceramic glass platen from usa knifemakers several belts from trugrit. I can definitely see where a 2 inch belt would be way better.

This guy ended up getting shortened because I ground it to thin at the tip.

Any words of wisdom or video links will be much appreciated. I think I will stick to files to do most of the work for now on the others I have going.

It was slicker then snot to use for the profiling. That 60 grit Norton ceramic was nice for that.

Justin,
It goes like this,
In New York City, A man with a Violin case stops a taxi driver and asks him, Sir, How do you get to Carnegie Hall?
The Taxi driver replies,
Practice! Practice! Practice!

Look up Nick Wheeler on you tube, I am sure he has some vids on Grinding? There are many others there you can watch for free. Look around your area for any Hammer ins, grind ins Knife maker groups you can join and meet with the guys & gals every month or so. I learned a lot that way when I started. There wasn't all of this net knife maker stuff.

You have done well, I suggest you used a inexpensive but usable steel and made each one like its the only one and has to be right! Look here, this was my first Big boy grinder, 2 x 72

Thanks rhino, your right I just need to grind away. Thanks for the reply. I definitely want to attend some events in my area in the future.
I also agree that people starting like me are spoiled with the wealth of knowledge that is available on the net.

Not a Bad Grind!

Like Laurence said, Practice is the only way to get to Carnegie Hall :D

I thought that guy was in Nashville with a Fiddle and was looking for the Grand Ol' Opry. HEHEHE. Anyway, practice is the key but Stabber is right, that don't look bad. They don't have to be anywhere near perfect before H/T. I just get em roughed in and worry about worry about cleaning everything up after H/T. I'd take that one to 120X and call it good.

You can see where I kinda got into the ricaso past the plunge. Do you all use a guide to keep that from happening? Thanks guys for the replys

I worked a little more on that knife I put the work rest back on and tried to true everything up and steady myself with the rest. I found it better and once I got it pretty flat it was a lot easier to tweak areas. I'm pretty happy.....Practice practice right I can't wait to grind some more!

Nice work, the norton Blaze belts are great. The 36 grit blaze belts seem to last forever. Glad to see you acquired a belt grinder.

That second one is outstanding! :)

And I know what you mean about grinding the tip too much, I did the very same thing on my first one... I think its about to become.. tanto-esque when I lop the tip off completely :)

Haha I know the first one kept getting shorter I did I had to adjust the handle profile to match. A lot easier to mess up than with files but I really enjoy it. I can only imagine what a 2x72 is like I hope I can save some cash up for one this summer.

I put a smaller pulley on the 1x42 and was able to slow the little bumble bee down. I feel like I'm not holding my breath and praying I don't gouge the crap out of the blade anymore. I did get some more practice in. I had some vacation days to use or I would lose here are a few.
