GeneK's KITH WIP

Well guys, bad news. I’ll have to start over on the inlays. It seems the figured claro walnut I used for the inlays is not a good choice for checkering. I got one of them 3/4 done and every other band in the figuring is very brittle. I can peel the checkering off those bands with my thumb.

Note to self, checker a test piece before deciding on material for the next one.

Can y’all just imagine what that inlay would like if I did it lol? It’d look like a dog got a hold of it. That’s some great, precise work, Gene!

The new inlays are made and fit, ready for checkering. I hope to get them done this weekend so I can start on the sheath.

To do the checkering, I cut a groove in a piece of plywood to hold the inlay.

I also made a jig to use as a guide for the file. The angle is 30 deg.

Here I have started cutting the checkering.

And I just couldn't wait any longer, so I headed back to the shop and finished one inlay.

The walnut I used for the inlay is stabilized, but I haven't figured a way to buff the checkering, so I will put Tru-oil on them.
