Grinder Motor...

Looking to build a grinder and curious what exactly am I looking for in a motor.. Found a few motors locally but not sure if they would work cause I dont know what exactly I should be looking for.. Thanks in advance..

BTW- Not looking to do a variable speed but rather using step pulleys..

Well for starters a 1 1/2 HP motor should be your minimum. It should turn at 1725 rpm and be TEFC. Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled. When I put mine together I bought a 1HP motor and it gets the job done but heavy grinding can bog it down a little. When I start my No Weld Grinder I am going to buy at least a 1 1/2HP motor and maybe a 2HP. I got a brand new WEG motor from Surplus Center for a good deal.

I do have what you need and probably at the best price you can find. I will try to do a new post real soon showing my new grinder with the VFD. You can actually build a VFD version for only about $255.00 a step pulley type. The machine then is MUCH better than the step pulley version. I need to quit telling folks this because I have a bunch of single phase motors here that I'm talking folks out of buying by selling them a VFD and a 3 phase motor.

Some time ago when I was looking to build a belt grinder, I saw somewhere can't exactly recall where or who, but general rule of thumb was 1hp/inch of belt width. I built a 2"x72" and put a 2hp on it, I found for most things it was plenty, but some heavy grinding coulda used a bit more.
