Harbor Freight 1x30" Modification

I've decided to go with a KMG grinder. I sold my Sears 2x42 but I like my little HF 1x30". It comes in handy for lots of jobs. I do prefer it on its side rather than vertical. Here's a mod my buddy helped me with (he did most of the work!) for the HF. What do you guys think?

that looks nice. The HF grinder is the only grinder that I have at this time what advantage do you gain by this modification it may be something I would like to try

I like to use it with the belt moving away from me. I plan on using the KMG for stock removal and most of the work. I'll reserve the HF for sharpening and some detail work.

I bought the same one the other day with the 20% off coupon found here on this site. I think I paid like $32. Well worth that! It has already been a very useful tool. Thanks for the tip.

I was thinking about getting one almost exclusively for profiling blades. I mostly draw file mine now. I have a Sears 2x42 but I hardly ever put the table on it. I was thinking the HF one would be good for profiling and maybe some handle work. Any opinions?

I paid $30 for mine. No better deal around. What's not to like. If it doesn't work out, no real loss.

nice mod! I could use that for a few things. now, if you make a decent platen, it'll be 5 times the fun.

just the basic ones.

one way to do it is make a mount out of 3/4x1 inch aluminum with holes all the way through and get some long mounting screws- then face it with steel, ceramic, or glass.

or just make a stiffer, better one in the same L shape.

I sold mine a while back and don't remember, but I *think* you can go under the frame and mount from the bottom, which would let you make a 2.5 or 3 inch long C or "[" shape platen that could mount on from both ends

Can someone point me to a couple places that have a wide selection of those 1x30 belts?
