This one turned out like a pukko almost with an antler handle. This is todays acomplishment. Still needs a bit of final work on blade and an edge

Weak bevel, hand guards screwed up and not what I like. Scratches still in the blade.
 
You can still work on it ! Just because the handle is on doesn't mean you can't go back at it. I probably made lots like that when I first started, but I didn't have anyone or a web site to help me along. Get out that filing guide and go to it !!!! Frank
 
Thanks for the atta boy Frank. It is just driven together handle isnt epoxied on yet. Am tearing it apart in am after work and putting a dam good smooth bevel on it. Have to pick up a new 120 or 200 grit belt for smoothing these out better. Have a wore out 120 that is kinda shining these planer blade knives. Hehe it is not really aggresively abrasive anymore so is probably alot finer than 100 now. Lol
 
If I could offer one piece of advice without sounding like a know it all (because I am not)....
Try to avoid making a knife with a straight spine. Just a small amount of curve is more appealing.
 
Lagrange that was a suggestion from one with more experience in this field than I. I do see the blah factor in this knife but is a cheepy quick make and sell type. 50 bucks w sheaths for two knives. So is basicly covering electricity barely.
 
Every one I have seen pics of has a straight spine. So one would be correct to draw such a conclusion as pukkos are straight spined. Lol

when you have the funds buy yourself some 36 grit belts. I start with 36 grit then 60 then 220 then heat treat. I go back to the 220 and then 400, 600 and last, if not a tactical knife, I finish it off with a 1200 belt. Your belts will last a lot longer.

I have at the moment 50 80 120 and wore out 120 that is working like 400. Lol Thanks for the tip steve.
 
If you read the Shop tips info on Bossdogs USA knife maker site you will read the truest statement ever about belts. " Use belts as if they were free!"

Worn belts really don't cut like higher grits. In all of my experience worn belts do nothing but create heat and waste my time.

I've read that you are limited in funds and what will keep you that way is wasting time and ruining stuff using worn belts with the heat they generate.
 
I have had four more duck fans want a knife similar to this witb a few customizations for their personam preference. Just got some orange to make a few for the high school here in roseburg or the beavers also.

Here are the pair of duck fans pukko w a western twist hunters. Now to sand away the 120 grit scratches from the bevel.
 
So I tried my hand at engraving an had my tip break on the second one so the letters are all screwy.

Those turned out probably better than my first few I made. I will make a couple sugestions.......First.... Do most all your grinding, sanding and finish work before putting anything together Second.....Take your time and slow down while doing your finish work.

That was my big issue was trying to get them done in a few min to deliver them. I also was in the oooooohhhhmmmmm one with the engraver and got hollered at by my toddler and tensed up twitch and screwed up the M. Turned out friday is when I will be getting paid for them so I had a couple more days to fine tune my work. GRRRRRRRR

I think that you might want to go to You Tube and search for knife grinding videos . You will find a host of instructional videos that will give you a better understanding of flat grinds ,convex and such .
