How does this work?

The specs say 2hp, 110v, single phase.........but with variable speed?

I always here you need 3 phase for variable speed.
I know ours at work are plugged into a 110v outlet.

Probably uses a 3 phase motor with a VFD just like you would use on a grinder.

Says it has a single phase motor, this could be incorrect, though. It certainly would not be the first time an ad listed incorrect specs.

Check out the shipping weight...I think it is likely there is something missing or incorrect from the specs. The motor is listed as AC 110v, although I think it probably runs AC into the speed pot and DC from there to the motor. That's how my variable speed micro lathe works.

Well thats what I was thinking except for the fact that we do not have any phase converters at work.

This sounds like the best explination, I will look at the motor on monday and see what the tag says.

So where can I find a motor and controller that would work with 110v for my NWG?

I have already talked with him about 1 for my grinder but I will see if he has DC.
that way I would just need a VFD like the one the drill press has.

Once you know the official name and specs, it is relatively easy to find a deal somewhere on the internet.

My best guess would be that it is 90 volt DC motor with a variable speed controller, but it could also be a brushed AC motor. Brushed AC motor's speed can be variable through a rheostat with standard 110/220 power without going through a phase converter or 3 phase.

Here is a link to the manual which states "The machine is powered by a 110-Volt single-phase line voltage but the control box (4709) powers a 3-phase, 220-Volt electrical motor at infinitely variable speeds."

I'm suprised they claim 2 hp, I thought 1 HP was the max for 110 AC.

Ok I looked at both our Ellis Drill presses at work today.
Both of them are the same.

They are 1750 RPM, 2hp, DC motors plugged into 110v
