How to clean up antique knives

I have gotten two antique (pre-1890) khurkuris from Atlanta Cutlery Corp. Sadly I missed out on a third knife that was on clearance. Anyway, both of the knives that I have are coated with gunk that probably started out as packing grease. I figure that I can clean the blades with a degreaser from an hardware store then coat the blades in WD-40. What would you recommend for cleaning up the wood handles with? Would Ren Wax be good enough to apply to the wood once I have it clean or would you recommend a finishing oil.
