How to set up ventilation for working G10 ?

Hi everybody

I have been working with a lot of G10 lately and my usual method is to turn a large box fan on to blow on high across my grinder and out of my garage which is my work shop. I would love to set up some kind of vacuum system with a funnel directly beneath my grinder but i am completely lost as to how to set it up. The way i am working it right now i can either not turn the fan on and just wear my respirator and cover my garage in G10 dust constantly (also my wife and son walk through the garage on a daily basis though never when im working) or i can use the fan and blow all the dust outside which then coats my truck in whatever color im working lol

any suggestions ??

thanks
steve

I've been debating this as well. I've seen photos of several guys set ups they have in their shops and I've looked at several vacuum systems. I know of some guys who use a high powered shop vac and others who use an actual vacuum system. The great thing about an actual system is that they have the strength to pull from multiple stations.

I would deffinately look at using a vacuum system as opposed to blowing the dust outside with a fan. Wearing a respirator protects you from inhaling the hazardous particles, but blowing the dust outside endangers anyone in the area to include your family and neighbors.

There are 4 x 8" Funnel shaped intake pieces.

I have them just below the bottom wheel of my Grinder and these feed a cheap 2.5 HP -5HP Canister vac that I keep in a wooden box to help cut down the noise.
Look at Harborfrieght. Also a bit better quality can be had from Grizzly.
These systems are far from perfect, But they help draw most of the grinding dust into the Vacuum.

I have two systems like these that I cobbled together. Well worth it!

Thanks for the info

Currently i have a gallon bucket underneath to catch steel shavings so i guess i would have to make something where i could inter change the two, the bucket for steel and the vacuum for the handle material??

thanks

I use an old welding smoke exhaust vacume blower. It vacumes in the dust at the grinder through a 6 inch tube, and exhausts it through the wall of the shop via a 4 inch tube, where it blows it into a large tub with a small amount of water to keep the dust from blowing around, also puts out any sparks from grinding steel. I also run a small 1-1/2 inch tube to my other small sanders, and the band saw, buy covering part of the 6 inch tube it will collect dust at those machines also. This is not the best solution but it works well. I still use my respirator on G10 and Micarta, that is some fine dust, and I don't want to take any chances inhaling it. These blowers can be bought at Graingers, they are costly, mine was an old one from my welding shop days.

The shop I'm in is rigged up with 6" dust collecting piping that is connected to every machine in the shop. It flows into a Jet dust collector and a cyclone setup. It helps control the dust, but it doesn't get it all. So, I still wear a mask and run the collector at the same time, and not just when I work with G10 but with every material. A guy can never be too safe!

I use one of these placed near my grinder or under it. It helps clean the dust out of the air, but it doesn't have much pull to suck the dust in from a distance. It does a really good job of getting the fine dust out of the air though. I usually just vaccuum the area up after I grind a few handles with a shop vac and let the air cleaner run for a bit. Always wear a respirator!!
