I allready have an 8" 6" 4" wheels , wanted a 10" for biiger blades decided on 12" bigger is allways better right, What do you guy's who have a 12" wheel think?

Well I have a 5" 8" & 2" But I don't have a 12" or currently hollow grind because I preferred Convex grinds.
I do however have a pet plan some day to get a 12 or 14" so that I could do some hollow grind blades with the slighest concave grind possible. I think those would be the strongest grind myself.

Good luck and let us know what you get?

I ordered the 12" from Rob at Beaumont metal works , I think the hollow on the bigger wheels look a little better probably a little stronger, I like most grinds, I do some flat, some convex doing a bowie that is convex right now , but for utility and small hunting knives I like hollow.

I have an 5, 8 and once I got a 10" wheel I retired my 8" wheel. I now only hollow grind on either a 5" or a 10"
5" obviously small knives and 10" on large ones. I would bet a 12 would be very handy, probably almost make me retire my 10" wheel.
I bet you will be very happy with it.
Main reason I no longer use the 8" was I would heat treat and forget what I hollow ground them with and do a cleanup pass and be like Doh. wrong wheel. THen knife would become too thin.
Never happens now that I retired my 8" wheel though.

The 12" has become my go to grind since the first military forum build. I like the longer graceful curve it gives, especially on wider blades. I never saw much difference in the 8" or 10" wheels. My grinds were 90% flat grinds for years but the 12" changed my mind. I'm thinking on a 16", probably working my way back to flat grinds the long way.

I have a 1,2,4 and 10 the 10 is all ive ever known but I think the 12 would be slightly stronger and less hollowed out. I do my razors on the 2 but mostly a 4 inch wheel and take then to what is considered 1/2 hollow. I would never make a knife even close to that as the blade is to fragile. Im sure youll like the 12. I hear people say a 14 inch contact wheel is good. Kellyw

Does anyone have some photos of a blade that has been ground on a 12 or 14 inch wheel. I would like to see the difference in the bevel.

Thanks!

First is the 12'' grind, blade is 1 1/8" wide and 3/16" thick at the ricasso. Second is 8" grind on 1 1/4" wide and 3/16" thick.

Whoa!
The difference is very striking from the 8" to the 12"
I much prefer the 12" But I'm sure it depends on the kind of knife you are making.

There are variables like how far you push your grind up the blade, but these are examples of pretty much the grind you get without doing that. Distal taper affects the grind height and depth too.

I have an eight, ten , and eighteen . Eighteen is the ony way to go. I was hesitant about grinding 5/8 to 3/4 wide blades but you can do it.
It makes bringing that grind down to zero almost easy. The hollow is pretty and tough at the same time.
