Is this an axe?

lamb 030.jpglamb 033.jpgi boguht this a looong timeago on ebay from france(if that helps).....is it a meat cleaver?....an axe?.....someother weird tool?.....what intrigues me is the handle....it has like a weird angle at the bottom of it...it might be hard to telll in my pic but imagine an all steel handle and then a thin piece of metal just randomly juttingout of the side of the handle.....what the heck is it there for?....ryan
 
also i do collect cleavers and i have only seen two of these knives ever.....i have the other one....it is a littlesmaller but exactly the same......the thing thast threw me is the angle on the handle....it is also thinner(the piece that comes out at an angle).......it would work great as a meat cleaver(kinda overkill) .....it just doesn't seem like one-itis so different from every style i ever saw.....ryan
