Could someone tell me where I can purchase cutoffs large enough to make sheaths for small skinners.I don't make anything fancy, and I have always purchased cutoffs from the the hobby stores, but for the last 2 months I cannot find any.I am getting a little better with my sheaths, and when I start making a little more money with my knives,I could pay a little more for leather.
Thanks for any help.

God bless,Keith

You might look around to see if there are any saddle makers in your area. They may be willing to sell you their cutoffs.

There is a local holster maker here in town that sells their leftover leather by the pound and you get to pick through it.

Good luck,

Look for any shops that do leather work saddle making, harness shops etc. You can find leather on Ebay and other sources on the internet. Good luck.

IF you have a Tandy Leather Factory store nearby. The one that I go to has a box of cut offs and small pieces, all different thicknesses in it. You may be able to order small pieces from them. tandyleatherfactory.com

Hay Keith,
I live over by Wiggins and work in Slidell, When I just have half a day or less , sometimes I run over to N.O. to Tandy and pick out my own, now I have some 8/9 oz that they sent to me that is NOT sanded on the back and I don't use.
If you will send me your shipping add, I will send it to you.
I think I have about 4 dbl shoulders all total, including the good stuff, The unsanded has been sitting for at least 6 mos
so I sure want miss it.

WOW Jerry, that is a very kind offer.I will PM you.
I have always wondered, every time I see McHenry, where that is,just never looked at a map.I have heard of Wiggins, now where is that from Tylertown.

Thanks my friend

God bless,Keith

FWIW- you can sand the back side smooth. Tougher to do on a large piece but once cut to skinner sized sheath shouldn't be a problem to smooth it up some.

Keith, Wiggins is about halfway between Hattiesburg and Gulfport. On hwy 49

Josh, It never turns out as good as the factory sanded stuff, I could fold over the opp way for the loop and skive the bottom end to go down in the sheith, but now I don't have to worry 'bout it,he he.

How do you sand the back? I have some I bought from Tandy last month and it is not sanded. Did not know it needed it. Now I know. Just don't know how. Thanks. James.

If you slightly wet your leather before sanding it, itwill work much better, cut down on the dust and give you a smoother finish. Then burnish(I use a deer antler).Dave:)
