Leatherwork mallet

I'm getting into some leather decorating on my sheaths and wondering about the use of mallets. I used a small hammer on my 1st project to good results. Why should you use a mallet? And what is a good inexpensive one to start with? Will rubber mallets work? I already have one of them.

heh! I have some old tools that show signs of being used with a metal hammer. I recon it to rescuing an abused dog, it'll never be the same as intended but its still a good thing. Just keep with the soft mallet and its going to improve with age. :)

Not a bad choice at all. :) You will find the hard plastic head much more useful than the soft rubber one. I like the idea that the heads are replaceable as well! That way you can get an extra plastic head for the other side and have a longer life to the tool.

I'll have to take a peek at these on my next visit, would make a good backup or student mallet. :D
