Does anyone have any advise for a newbie maker? My micarta seems to show alot threads from the material when sanding. I can't seem to get that smooth finish I am looking for. Is this technique or is this normal for micarta?

I sand to 600 and buff, works great

if you want a more textured finish - sand to 80 and spray it with wd40

What time of micarta? Canvas, Linen, or paper?

I use a wood block with a thick piece of leather glued to the side where the sand paper will be. Rub with finer and finer sand paper until uniform in color and all the whitish light spots are gone. These light spots are the low spots. With 600 gr you can get a good finish going to the buffer but, sometimes I also rub it with OOOO steel wool first. The fibers showing is just a case of not being rubbed down enough.
