My small achievements

My daughters first knife from me. Is a broken M2 planer blade some scrap brass and an elk antler shed with 5gal plastic bucket spacers cut and shaped to match the antler and guard.

Paring knife made from a thin planer blade, antler shed,bucket spacers and a 12ga shotgun shell driven over the end as a pommel cap.

Another paring knife with ten times the hrs polishing the blade as was into making the knife.

My first attempt at a hunting knife and the handle was almost twice the size of the blade.

The fillet knife I made for my dad using a thin planer blade.

My grunt buddies combat knife I made for him.

Basic no frills chopper/last resort knife 18" oal and paracord wrapped handle

The very first knife I made for my wife to use. Planer blade, uhmw guard and antler handle.

Every thing I use is either scrap or some one elses junk or shed from deer and elk.

I know the inexperience I have shows in these but like I have been told they look like knives and they cut (I know first hand errrr thumbs lol) sonis a good start. What advice besides patience and time and keep reading the forums do the old dogs have for this young pup?

And all of these were made with a dremel,drill,sawzall and, a 4.5" angle grinder.

There are no "small" achievements.
These are all to be proud of and to build and progress from.

Thanks Steve. I learned why elk antler is done as scales, it splits if you try to drive it onto the tang.

Congratulations !........you've got the bug.
You've given new life to otherwise scrap materials that perform a useful function. You're obviously persistant and resourceful. Believe it or not, unless you're trying really hard, they get better with each one you do. Even with basic tools, you'll find new ways to use them.

On the elk, you can drill oversize and fill it with epoxy or a wooden dowel. You can also make a broach with the most basic of tools.

Thanks Rudy. It took one split antler to figure the larger hole and fill with epoxy or pin it.

Here is the knife I am making my grandfather for christmas mocked up. The rubber bands are about where the pins will be. Is 9" oal 4" blade from an old planer blade. The scales are myrtlewood from a rifle stock blank that wood worms got into. My grandfather cut it into .5" x4" scales.

Still have alot of shaping to do to reduce the thickness and contour the scales.

Doweled together to check fit and feel. Have a little more to sand back on the scales and add another colored spacer, and shape the guard. Then is showtime well, epoxy time.

New idea and it came to be. Kinda a pukko meets western hunter.
