I just made my first knife blade forged from 5160 steel. I hardened it by heating beyond magnetic state and quenching in hydraulic oil. Blade is now real shiny and has bumps and stuff all over it. anyone know why? is this blade ruined? thanks for any help.

When you quenched, did you move the blade around or just put it in and let it rest in one place? Was the oil at room temp or pre-heated (what temps)? Are the bumps "hollow" as in surface crud? Also, can you post a picture?

There are quite a few reasons why you would be seening something like this. Get a pic of it and I'm SURE some of the more experienced will chime in.
