Fellow addict from Texas saying Hello and ready to learn. Been collecting knives since I was a little one and decided to take the plunge to trying to make a knife about a year ago. Been reading and researching for the last year and started on my 1st knife in early October, then I stumbled across this site. I have already read all the tutorials and have learned more during the last 3 weeks than I have on another site after a year.

I have resumed work on my 1st knife but it a slow process as I am using files only and will post pics once completed.

Hey welcome I am new too....and hope to learn so far the admins are cool......sometimes. I hope to be a trouble maker but I also am learning too. I hope to always be learning. I customize, hand file and repair but I like you am ready to jump into making knives as well. Just remember one of the best in the world makes all of his knives with no power tools........all by hand. Crazy old man from Utah. What a encouragement to us newbies..........you take care and hope to see your progress.

welcome. you and me there are some thing are the same.when i finished my school, i work in the knife factory for 2 years. Dring working,i am intereted in handle materials, begin to study, search relevant imformaiton on internet, also my boss teach me more about handle material. Anyway, my uncle, he teach me all his experience. Now i begin my handle material business, i just sold my 1st mammoth ivoy 3days ago. i am so happy for that, but i know that is my first step, i have to keep learning.

The answer to a 13 year old student is different than to a 40 year old engineer, and you may have a helpful neighbour.
We can often recommend a local supplier, but that depends on where you are.
Fill out your profile with your location (Country and State at least), age, education, employment.

Look at the stickies at the top, many are expired, but not all.

The $50 knife shop
It is popular, but it confused me for a long time.
Forging is NOT necessary, you can just file and grind everything away to create a knife (stock removal)

The goop quench is total Bull, commercially made quench oils are cheap and easily available, even grocery store canola oil works much better.

Junkyard steels require the skills of an experienced smith to identify the steel and heat treat it properly.
You can buy proper steel like 1084 very cheaply.
(Mentioned in the new edition)

I like cable damascus, but that is an advanced project for an experienced smith and has no place in a beginners book.

The home built grinders are the best thing about the book, but there is now a huge amount of info on home built 2x72 belt grinders on the web.
The revised edition of this book should have included this.

“Custom Knife Sheaths -Chuck Burrows - Wild Rose”

You can see a list of some older videos and their reviews at this rental company.
They are not the quickest on getting new titles, but some videos are worth buying, some are worth renting…
Rental wait times are measured in months, buying is MUCH faster, but more costly.

I have read all the tutorials and even book marked some of the links. Like I said, when I found this site I stopped what I was doing and started learning again.
