Puukkos!!!

Hello all, recently I have given myself a new project after seeing Michael's100 little seaxs project last year. So I started a project for production puukkos. Jason Kraus from Northstar Forge and I are working on this project together and we are still in the prototype phase so please forgive the poor photos. Yesterday we did a couple of basic tests with the knife to make sure it stands up to snuff. So here are the stats 1095 blade 3 1/2 inches long for each knife with a variable handle length of about 4 inches. I say variable because we are still trying to figure out which size is the most "universally comfortable" for this size knife. I think yesterday we finally have a handle pattern that we both agreed on so any new puukos should have that lay out. The picture below is of the first four but as of Monday we will have eight done. Sadly no picture of the "model" handle. Please tell me what you think of these knives while we are still in the design phase your critique would be very appreciated. Thanks for looking!

I just remembered that I had one of the puukkos in my bag so I snapped a photo of it this morning. This is the "pattern" layout that we would like to do on all future puukkos. It is green leather, Bolivian rosewood, stainless steel, cherry and then repeat with brass. This one still needs to be cleaned up and have it's edge put on but it gives you a good idea. Tell me what you think!

Looks nice from what you have here. You have certainly mastered the art of getting them to look good and be sharp.
I'm curious about something.
I noticed that the blade is sharpened all the way to the handle. That is not bad in and of itself, but I can see your customers complaining that they had an accident when their hand slipped and slid onto the blade edge.
I dont know anything about puukkos and maybe I should have researched it before I replied to this, but I am just wondering if this could be considered a manufacturerers flaw and have repercussions to follow.
I'm not trying to be a pain. I like the idea, and you obviously know how to do what you are doing. Just throwing this out there.

Okay..I looked it up. Now I feel dumb.
Are you guys adding the handle material after you sharpen these? I'm curious how you get the blade sharpened all the way to the face of the handle material. I'm also curious how one goes about sharpening these back into those tight recesses?

Lagrange, no need to feel dumb at all, this style of knife is not very well known yet in the states. As far as sharpening goes we do mostly sharpen the blade prior to assembly but we put the final edge on after assembly. I like to use an 800 grit belt for the final edge and haven't yet had a problem with getting into the corner. As long as the customer can use a sharpening stone and it has a good corner then it should sharpen up quickly. We will be providing a little customer care "manual" with each of these knives just in case.

Those look nice. Hey Eric i had to look it up also. Ive always admired the look and simplicity of this style knife. If you desired a guard it looks easy enough to make that front oval pc a little longer at the bottom.

Douglas, thanks for the compliment it would be easy to add in a "guard" but I think they look kind of funky with them...
