Question about filework.

I am working on my first Bowie...and I am going to do a vine pattern on the spine. Is it better to file pre or post heat treat? This knife is stretching me as a knife maker...it will be my first Bowie...my first hidden tang and my first sharpened clip point blade. I am really taking my time with this one. It will also be my first Elk Antler handle. The guy I am making it for originally wanted serrations on the spine which would have been another first for me but we settled on file work. As soon as I get it done I will be posting the pics here.

Unless you have diamond files you probably better file it before you heat treat it or we will be comming to visit you in the old folks home before you finish it.

It really depends upon the steel type and what type of heat treat (full or differential).

That's they way I do mine too. In that case, you can do the file work post heat treat and it won't be too tough on your files. Sorry for the delay in getting back to ya.
