Question about knife spine filing

I would like to know how most of the knifemakers handle the filings on the spine of the blade. I am making my final of three knives (at least for now as gun grip making is my Forte'), and I'm making them for the kids. I was wondering if the resin should fill the gaps, or should I file the wood to meet the gaps?
