S-7

JAWilliams

KNIFEMAKER
Has anyone worked with this or made a knife from it? Or can a knife be made from it? Just wondering about it. Thanks, James

...s7 will make some of the toughest tools that can be. That said, it'll make a helluva tough knife, but not one that will take and hold a fine edge like carbon steels or some of the better stainless blade steels.

Have you looked into S5? S5 is the toughest of the S-class steels. It is tougher than S7, and can reach a working hardness of up to 62 rc with a water quench. At 60 rc, S5 has 3x the impact toughness of L6.

I'd say yes. Scrap Yard Knives uses "modified" S7 with good results. Also, Justin Gingrich has made some S7 knives, and Gossman Knives has made some S7 knives. It seems that the common opinion is that it takes and holds a decent edge, but really shines in toughness. People seem to like S7 for big choppers rather than smaller knives.
