Schrade Automatic Family Heirloom Resurrected!

This knife was my great grandfather's and was obviously not taken care of. It bounced around in his tool box and was used as a shop tool for decades. Several years ago my mother asked me if I wanted it and I eagerly accepted it with the intentions of restoring it. I tried to keep as much of the original knife as I could. I had to regrind the blade which was very slow going as I didn't want to lose any of the hardness of the blade. The design itself is somewhat complicated and with the rivets being so close to the edge I had no choice but to go with rivets upon reassembly. It gave me fits and I held my breath riveting this thing together!! I remade or cleaned and polished everything and got it working like new again. really pleased with how it turned out!

Nice save, I know a lot of work went into. I've restored a few old slipjoints myself, but never an Auto.

A lot of sentimental valule there, I'm sure.

This is really awesome! Bringing life back into something that has a lot of meaning is what it's all about.

I really appreciate all the compliments! The knife was my 73 year old mom's grandfather. She couldn't believe it when she saw it! According to the research I've done, the knife was made sometime late teens early twenties. Here is his old toolbox this knife bounced around in.

You did a very good job on the knife. I am impressed.

I just finished repairing a heirloom folder for a friend. Never made this type of knife so didn't know what I was getting in to.

I hope I never have to do that again.

Somebody took the time to time the screws on that box!

Don't erase the age of that fine old box. Just my 2 cents you know how that goes.

Thanks again guys! I'm still considering what to do about the toolbox. I may leave it or do a little something to it? Definitely don't want to mess up the patina!

That's awesome! Starting to see more of the heirloom mindset these days. A lot of customers are looking for knives they want to pass down.
