Shadow pattern/sodbuster slipjoint washers

Lots of info on the net about washers on the inside of a slipjoint. I'm looking for info, a how-to, or a WIP on the washers on the outside of a slipjoint, to reinforce the area around the pivot pin on a linerless. Am I making enough sense so that someone can point me in the right direction?

Specific questions include: where does one get such washers? how does one inset/countersink the handle material?

Had been googling sodbuster, not shadow pattern. Turned up a tutorial on Knifedogs of all places :) Answer #2 is "end mill." Where do you get brass rod stock?
 
Figures... Boss dog has 1/4" brass rod, and my order just shipped right before I found it on his site.
