Sheath for my moms kitchen knife

Kevin Zito

KNIFE MAKER
She requested a sheath with no strap for the drawer. She also said that it didn’t matter how it looked so I experimented lol. This is what I came up with. I certainly need more practice, but I (kinda the odd ball out here) actually really like doing the leather work. Suggestions for improvement, please. Oh I also made sure to put the filework in these pics, CC.1D487EB7-7B14-4F68-A8B9-3EC21BA25A37.jpeg799C63E5-0DB4-48A9-ADA9-70782A6E8535.jpegimage.jpgimage.jpgThoughts?1D487EB7-7B14-4F68-A8B9-3EC21BA25A37.jpeg799C63E5-0DB4-48A9-ADA9-70782A6E8535.jpeg

I like it, Kevin. The design works, the stitching is straight, and the stamp is even. I think you should be proud of it. I kind of like doing leather work too. I don't make very many sheaths since I make mostly folders, but it's fun to pull out the leather working tools now and then.

That brings up an interesting point for discussion Kevin, on how we present our kitchen knives for clients. I am not a big fan of knife blocks on the bench so made a 1 1/2 inch deep drawer right under the bench top that is 18 inches wide and have all the sharp knives in that with a secondary base having each knife's handle profile cut out so it holds the knife securely but I have a kitchen set under construction at the moment that will be for sale, and hadn't considered how to present them so this is a timely post. For those that put thier knives in the 2nd drawer down from the top - ie the utensils drawer, the sheath you have done is just the ticket.
What does everyone else do for the kitchen knives that are not in a presentation case?? Hope this in considered a furtherance of Kevins post and not a hijack.

Gruff, I have wondered the same thing many times
I don't do kitchen knives! However the idea is too keep the knives edge sharp! So if a case is not provided you might include that. https://www.webstaurantstore.com/24...gPWDIgbffeXsAkgmKBaLnziJ7RzoFwyBoC0uAQAvD_BwE Here is one for cheap and way cheaper than a sheath. Perhaps one with each kitchen knife might be a way to solve the problem! Just a thought!!

Oh, and by the way Kevin, I love the sheath!
thanks, CC!

From the cheap and nasty section i just make edge guards form electrical conduit... take the thin walled ones heat them in temper oven to almost 100 degc and they will be floppy, clamp between two planks... if i want a curve i just take two pliers and pull on the opposite ends of the pipe but same place circumference before i squash them... then grind off the one side and neaten edges on a coarse belt and clean out all the grit...

It can scratch a blade so kydex properly made will possibly be better...

I supply a kydex blade cover with each kitchen knife I sell. This serves a lot of purposes- it saves me from having to buy a bunch of various size presentation boxes, it gives the customer a safe way to handle the knife (or send it back for sharpening), and finally it is amazing to me how many people throw a knife in a drawer loose. (!!) My mother does that because all her life she had cheap, dull knives. I kept thinking she will do this with the knife I made her and cut her fingers off one day. That's when I started making a cover for every knife I ship.

My blade covers are super simple. It's just folded kydex with nice round corners. I don't even rivet the open side anymore. This makes it easier to clean if need be, and it holds the knife just fine.

I have been looking for a cheaper alternative to kydex, and I am having an amazingly difficult time finding cardboard knife sleeves. This site offers a few basic ones but always seems to be out of stock. I found another guy on the internet who is basically just working through an email address but you have to buy a huge lot. I can't believe it's so difficult to find them.
