So I have a blade that i have ground to about .040" at the cutting edge, and it has been heat treated. i want to try to put a convex bevel on it. is now the time to do that? I currently have about a 10* flat grind on it (3/16" thick) do i go at it with the same 10* or do I do an 8* grind. any help is appreciated.

You go up the the slack area of the belt and use that to grind the secondary bevel just as you would for a flat secondary bevel over the platen. You'll have to play with a bit to get the bevels the way you want them.

Doug, i was planning removing the platen and grinding in that area or i will have to stand on a ladder.. LOL i will need to keep the belt really tight right?

That works, some actually like to remove the platen to slack grind. Probably so they don't have to get up on ladders. Mine's just not as easy to remove the platen on but I would do it if I had to.

I remove the platen for this part. I grind sitting down mostly. I suggest you try grinding slack on a messed up blade or other scrap piece first to get a idea how each part of the slack belt will work and it also depends on the weight or backing of the belts you are using how much flex you will get.
