The V2 of the green Hippo:D
I wasn't satisfied by the heat treatment and the shaving of the first one. I quenched another time, tempered and changed the tempering temperature to have something a bit softer.

Now i'm happy, that is efficient and smooth :D. That was one of the first time i used the C130 steel :D

Nice! I like the green even tho I am not usually into green, especially the neon look, but I like it. Nice job.
 
I am unfamiliar with C130 steel. I would assume it is a very low alloy carbon steel with about 1.3% carbon, and not much else. Like Hitachi White or something close? C135 I know, but C130 not so much. Where do you source it? If it has that much carbon, and very little Mn, I would love to try it on kitchen knives. The razor looks WICKED cool, by the way! I love it!
 
Awesome....thanks for the info and the link! I am always interested in high carbon zero alloy steel!!!! What about this SC145 and Mr Wirtz? I have seen his name tossed around often, and he and I even exchanged an email or two if I remember right. I was trying to source 1.2519 (have since found it), and he was trying to get me on 1.2442, but never did reply with cost and what have you. Not a problem tho, because I had put too much $$$ in the 1.2519 (which is VERY close to Blue # 2, btw). Is Achim the guy to contact about SC145? If so...how? I don't think I have his contact info any longer. Thanks again!!
 
Yes achim is the guy to contact for the sc145. I stopped to use 1.2519 since i use 1.2442 . That steel is less tough and sharp than any other tool steel for me :) even the 1.2519 which was my favorite was beaten by the 115w8 :D

For the sc145 that is the supplyer :D

For the price of the 1.2442 man are more or less in the same world than 1.2510 ou 1.2842.
 
Thank you, and I received your PM. I really appreciate it. So exactly why do you prefer 1.2442 over 1.2519? Just looking at the composition, I would think 1.2519 would be "tougher" than 1.2442. There is no Ni, no V, no Mo, less Mn, less Cr, less Si in the 1.2442. The only advantage I see 1.2442 having over 1.2519 is the low Mn count for better hamon formation...but hamon formation can't be too good due to the Cr and other alloying elements. Of course, numbers aren't everything! Formulas do NOT rule the world!
 
Just a bit more of carbone, and a bit more or tungsten. Less chrome indeed, same manganese, same silicium quantity.

That is mainly the amount of tungstène and the carbone quantity. It make really hard and tough edge, but it don't chip at all. The 1.2442 is and old steel use to make industrial saw to cut steel before they was in hss ;).

1.2442 est composé de :

  • 1,15 % de carbone
  • 2 % de tungstène.
  • 0,23% de silicium
  • 0,30 de manganèse
  • 0,20 de chrome
L'acier 1.2519 ou 110WCrV5 est composé de :
- Carbone : 1,10 %
- Silicium : 0,23 %
- Manganèse : 0,30 %
- Chrome : 1,20%
- Vanadium : 0,20 %
- Tungstène : 1,30 %
