Started Forging my First Forged Knife tonight

Nothing like 'doing' to learn- and sounds like you are enjoying yourself in the process- I think that's the most important 'ability'! Your knife looks great, especially for the first forged.

I wondered what size propane tank you were using. Switching to a larger tank might save you a lot of grief from frosting up.

There is an advantage with a 2 11/2 lb hammer. You can work with it all day without getting all tired out. You didn't say what you were using as an anvil. That can have a lot to do with how fast the steel moves. I got an 86 lb block of H13 and it was like a night and day difference between that and the 110 lb Mexican made piece of cast steel with a useless hardy hole that I had been using.
