Still figuring it all out...This one ain't gonna make it

Well I'm still trying to figure everything out, but this one just ain't gonna make the grade.... Oh well it sure is good therapy :biggrin:. I didn't want to waste a god file so I used a cheap who knows were it came from one. I did like the way the Wharncliffe style blade turned out. The cracks really showed up when I got the hand sand down to 400. I pulled off and decided to use this one for a pattern. Looks like it's back to the grinder..........
I watched a youtube video from Morris Knifes, does any one know how he anneals his files?

Steels need to quench differently with different mediums... I use water almost all the time now but certain steels can't be just dumped into the bucket. They may have to be dipped a couple times to slow the quench time down.
 
I started with files awhile back "Years ago" and one of the ways to make the knife is to grind & dunk to keep it cool so that you don't lose the hardness in the grinding.

The blade edge will be very hard and may chip if you twist and hack with it. I had good luck with these in a Draw cutting knife like the Sheepfoots / Warnie pattern you have made.

Keep your nose to that grind stone.

Thanks everyone, I heated it to non magnetic and then let it cool it the furnace for a couple of days. I noticed the cracks while I was grinding the blade profile, I think that they were already there or it happened when I was normalizing the file. Like I said it was a cheapo file I didn't want to waste a good one.

What should I have done different, if anything? Am I using the wrong normalizing technique to soften the file for grinding?
 
next time maybe bring the heath up slow after it gets non magetic put it in a can of ashes ive found some nickels used files at fle markets
 
I would believe the cracks were already there, but you didn't say just how you normalized. Annealing is not normalizing.
 
Thank you for the input. I've got a brand new box of Nicholson rasp that I'm going to start on this weekend.
