I just got smacked for a smart-aleck comment, so here's some proper discussion.
Knowing the quality of "knife people" I have to continue to believe that the thieves are just after a saleable commodity and not real collectors.
That loss is a real shame, not for the value, but for all that lost work.
How did they get it?
What do people use as anti theft measures at shows?
How do you balance security against the need for people to handle your goods in order to sell them.
