Thumb notches before or after HT

Working on a hunting style knife that I want to put notches in the spine for thumb grip. Should I do this before or after HT? I know it will be easier to do before but I was worried about the square notches cracking during the HT cycle.

The notches shouldn't crack. At least they have never cracked on me. But like you said it is easier to do them before.

Square notches should be avoided at weak spots where the knife would have laterial or torque pressure applied. They won't crack on their own. Well almost never. Thumb notch cuts shouldn't ever be any kind of worry.
